We live in a world that celebrates productivity, relaxation, and quality time with loved ones. Doing the dishes, relaxing on the couch, and playing with your kids are all good things—gifts that can reflect stewardship, rest, and love. But as followers of Christ, we’re called to something deeper than simply doing “good things.” We’re called to seek God’s heart in every moment.
Good Things vs. God's Best
It’s easy to fill our days with good activities:
-
Doing the dishes keeps our homes in order.
-
Relaxing on the couch gives our bodies and minds rest.
-
Playing with the kids builds relationships and memories.
But the real question is, “God, what do you want me doing right now?” Sometimes, the right thing is to get off the couch and play with your kids. Other times, it’s to leave the play and tend to chores. Yet there are moments when the best thing is to put everything down and simply sit at the feet of Jesus.
The Story of Mary and Martha
In Luke 10:38-42, we find two sisters, Mary and Martha. Martha is busy with preparations, serving and doing what’s good. Mary, on the other hand, chooses to sit at Jesus’ feet, listening to His teaching. When Martha complains, Jesus gently responds:
“Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42, NIV)
Mary’s choice wasn’t about neglecting responsibility, but about discerning the moment. She recognized that being with Jesus was better than any good thing she could do.
Discernment in Everyday
God is not asking us to abandon our responsibilities or stop enjoying life’s simple pleasures. Instead, He invites us to:
-
Pause and Ask: “Lord, what do you want me to do right now?”
-
Listen for His Guidance: Sometimes, His Spirit will nudge us to serve, to rest, or to be present with others.
-
Prioritize His Presence: There will be moments when the best thing is to set aside every task and simply be with Him.
Practical Steps
-
Start your day with prayer. Invite God into your schedule and ask for wisdom to discern His priorities.
-
Be flexible. Good plans are important, but God’s leading may redirect you.
-
Practice saying "yes" to God. Even if it means putting down something good for something better.
Reflection
Ask yourself: Am I settling for “good” when God is offering me “better”? Am I willing to lay aside my agenda to listen for His voice?
Remember, God is not just good—He is better than good. His ways, His timing, and His presence are always what we need most. Let’s be people who seek not just to do good, but to do what God wants us to do, right now.
Let's Pray
Lord, help me to seek Your best above all else. Give me wisdom to discern when to serve, when to rest, and when to sit at Your feet. Amen.
Dream boldly. Plan wisely. Honor God daily.
